Crypto – Apex Guide: Origin
Crypto is your go to hacker and encryption expert. His real name is Tae Joon Park and he joined the Apex Games to find the people who framed him for murder. He was an orphan abandoned at a young age and grew up to be a computer engineer for the Mercenary Syndicate, along with his foster sister, Mila Alexander. Then one day they stumbled upon an algorithm that could predict the results of any Apex Games match. This algorithm could be used in many ways, even to rig the outcome of a match.
The discovery caught the attention of the wrong people and the very next day, Mila disappeared. Tae Joon was forced into hiding after being framed for her murder. He changed his identity to stay safe for all these years but has now come out of hiding. He’s now joined the Apex Games to clear his name once and for all.
Crypto – Apex Guide: Strengths and Weaknesses
Crypto is a top-tier recon legend with many tricks up his sleeves. With the ability to deploy a surveillance drop, he is quick to spot any nearby or even further away enemies. If you have your teammates rush in, you can even activate the drone’s EMP to stun and deal shield damage to any enemies in its radius. This doesn’t come without its setbacks.
While Crypto is in his surveillance drone, his body is rendered useless. You can either hide him in a secure location and your teammates can push in or you can have them cover your body. Using Crypto’s abilities can be a little time-consuming but if you use this legend right there should be no stopping you and your team.
Crypto – Apex Guide: Abilities Overview
As we’ve said before, Crypto is a recon-based legend. He is mainly used to survey the surrounding area and reveals enemy locations. Let’s take a general look at what he brings to the table.
- Passive: Neurolink
- This gives your teammates the ability to see enemy locations from the surveillance drone within a 30m distance.
- Tactical: Surveillance Drone
- You’re able to deploy a drone that gives you a set of eyes in the sky. If destroyed, there is a cooldown of 40 seconds.
- Ultimate: Drone EMP
- The EMP is activated from your drone. This sends an EMP blast that slows enemies, destroys traps, and deals 50 shield damage.
Neurolink Tips (Passive)
Crypto’s passive is based on his Tactical ability, Surveillance Drone. His passive highlights enemies within 30m of the drone’s line of sight. So yes, if enemies are behind objects, your drone will not detect them for your teammates (but you can detect enemies through clear objects like a window). Without this vital ability, Crypto wouldn’t be nearly as useful of a legend as other recon-based legends.
Surveillance Drone Tips (Tactical)
Crypto’s surveillance drone is the bread and butter of all his abilities. It is used for his passive and his ultimate. You can deploy the drone and navigate the skies or stick to the low ground depending on the circumstance. This ability is vital for detecting enemy locations and so much more.
Things you might not have known about Crypto’s Surveillance Drone:
- Do you know the 3 large banners displayed in multiple locations across each map? While in Crypto’s surveillance drone, the banner will display the number of teams within 200 meters of your current location. This is huge to avoid sneak attacks and 3rd parties.
- Your Neurolink only highlights enemies that are within 30m of your drone. Instead of risking your drone and getting too close, simply ping the enemy locations to your team and get into the fight quicker.
- Since you are a sitting duck while in your drone, get to a secure location and have a teammate look over you if needed.
- While your Surveillance Drone is useful for finding enemies, it can also open doors and supply bins to see if areas ahead are worth looting or have already been looted.
- You can also activate Survey Beacons, pick up dead teammates’ banners, and revive them at Respawn Beacons.
- Try not to focus on staying in your drone when your team is engaged in a fight. It is always better to have a 3v3 fight rather than a 2v3.
- Crypto’s drone has rather low health but is very quick. When destroyed, it has a long cooldown before you can deploy again. Keep your drone on the move to avoid gunfire and if it takes a hit or two try to recall your drone because you can use it again as soon as it’s recalled.
Drone EMP Tips (Ultimate)
Crypto’s Drone EMP is a powerful and effective ultimate ability. While in your Surveillance Drone it takes 3 seconds to activate your EMP blast. This ability deals 50 damage to all nearby enemies and also slows them for a short period.
Things you might not have known about Crypto’s Drone EMP:
- While your drone does have to be activated for your EMP to go off, you don’t have to actively be in your drone. You can leave your drone outside an enemy’s building, leave drone view and have your drone sitting there, then as you push up, activate your EMP.
- Try to have your teammates outside of the EMP blast. This is because any player inside the EMP will be slowed. Don’t worry, they will not take damage but you and your enemies will.
- Since it takes 3 seconds for your EMP to go off, enemies will likely try to shoot it. Make sure your drone is not in the line of sight or simply keep your drone moving at a high speed while activating your EMP.
- If being rushed, it isn’t a bad idea to activate your EMP with your entire team inside it. This will likely make the enemy team back off or they push in with 50 fewer shields.
- Once Crypto’s EMP goes off it will instantly take down Lifeline’s drone, Wattson’s fences and pylons, Mirage’s decoys, Gibraltar’s dome, Caustic’s gas traps, Loba’s Black Market, Rampart’s Amped Cover, and enemy Crypto drones.
Crypto – Apex Guide: Tips and Tricks
Lastly, I want to go over some tips and tricks you should be aware of while playing Crypto. Try to apply these in each of your matches going forward.
- Communication is key. There is no point in having a recon-based legend without good communication. Don’t let your drone do that talking for you. Give your teammates callouts, whether it be enemy locations, the sound of gunfire, already looted areas, or how many enemies are within 200 meters.
- Master the Surveillance Drone. Your drone is just as, if not more, useful than Crypto himself. The movement can be tricky at times so try to get the hang of that so you can outmaneuver gunfire and quickly evade it to a safe location. When you master the movement you are able to gather information much quicker and relay that information to teammates.
- You don’t need to 1v3 clutch. As we’ve already mentioned, Crypto’s Surveillance Drone can pick up teammates’ banners. If you get in the unfortunate situation where your teammates are taken out while you are in your drone, simply recall your drone and retreat to a more secure location. Once the enemy team has given up on finding you and has cleared out, deploy your drone to recover your teammates’ banners and revive in a secure location. Now if the other team has a Bloodhound……sorry. You can even go to grab your teammates’ banners if the other team enters another gunfight.
